Maintenance Tips For Keeping Large Sheds In Top Shape

Whether you use your large domestic shed for housing your tool collection, storing your farming equipment, sheltering animals, as a haven for your hobbies, or anything else requiring additional space not in your primary residence, there’s no doubt you want this investment to last well into the future.

Neglect can lead to costly repairs, a shorter lifespan and a shed that's more of a 'shambles' than 'chic’. Here's the good news: With a little proactive care, you can ensure your domestic shed remains sturdy and reliable for years to come.

Keeping It Clean

A well-cleaned shed will last longer. After a storm or during seasonal changes, dust, debris and leaves can quickly accumulate on the shed's roof, walls and gutters, eventually leading to structural damage or drainage issues if not kept in check.

  • Regularly sweep and mop the floor with a mild detergent solution to remove stains and grime.

  • Dust and wipe down shelves, walls, windows and other surfaces.

  • Use shelves and storage containers to organise your belongings and keep them off the floor.

  • For a deeper clean, use a pressure washer on the shed’s exterior.

Shed-ucated Inspections

At least twice a year, roll up your sleeves and look for signs of wear, like cracks or loose panels, and moisture buildup so you can address it quickly. Detecting issues early can help you avoid costly repairs later on and extend the shed's life.

  • Seal any cracks or gaps in the walls and roof to prevent pests and moisture from entering

Rust Buster – Keep Corrosion at Bay

Even if they are coated or galvanised, metal sheds face the ever-present threat of rust and corrosion.

  • Spot a rusty intruder? Sand it down and apply a rust-inhibiting primer before applying a fresh coat of paint.

  • Ventilation is key! Good airflow keeps moisture at bay, minimising the risk of corrosion.

Roof Rescue

The roof is your shed's first line of defence against the elements.

  • Clear the roof regularly of debris, such as leaves or branches, which trap moisture and encourage rust and leaks.

  • Don't forget the gutters and downspouts! Clean them out regularly to prevent water buildup and potential damage.

Proper Ventilation is Vital

Proper ventilation helps prevent dampness, mould and mildew from developing, which can damage stored items and compromise the shed's structure.

  • Install a vent or extractor fan to keep the air circulating.

  • Seal those gaps to keep out unwanted critters (like rodents, birds and insects).
